Watercolour is one of the mediums I keep coming back to. I enjoy how versatile it is, and how easy it is to sit down and start a painting. Here’s a selection ranging from simpler pieces to more complex.
The quietest waters hold the biggest secrets
This was for an art jam, the theme being the title of the piece. For this one I wanted a mysterious atmosphere, and I liked the idea of bisecting the image with the waterline, to better capture the quietness of the water in contrast to the secrets within. I had lots of fun on this watercolour, and the dragon’s silver belly and face, as well as the gold coins, are painted with shiny paint.
Little Old Fiat
Painted for my partner, who is mad about cars. I enjoyed trying out burnt sienna colored ink here, I think it gives it a summary and rustic look.
Offerings for the Hoard
Offering a new little tree to the fearsome dragon hoarding plants (a garden).
This is a very small watercolour painting, around A7 size. I painted it as a mother’s day present for my mum, who would be a fearsome black dragon if the option were available, and at the time of writing is planting up a whole garden.
Kid Goku
A gift for my dad, with bold and saturated colours pushing me out of my comfort zone. This one is fanart of Goku from Dragon Ball.
The creatures that come out in the rain
I was given the prompt “The creatures that come out in the rain” as part of an art jam, which led me to create this painting. The water dragon is a creature I came up with previously, and it is a creature that comes out in the rain, so it felt fitting to include them here. I really loved going for a storybook style, and I’m very happy with the mood created here.
Garden Helper
This was a present for my mum, depicting one of her cats. Not specifically of her garden, but with plants she’s growing.
A Knight in Spring
The magenta ink here was very much outside of my comfort zone, but I think it was a fun way to bring more colour and vibrancy to this illustration.
Two creatures, both alike in dignity
“Two creatures, both alike in dignity,
In ancient ruins, where we lay our scene,
From verdant relics of serenity,
Where summer sun lends sable warmth and sheen.”
I enjoyed painting the ancient ruins a lot, and went for a Mediterranean feeling scene. I wanted to draw a comparison here between cats and dragons.
A Forgotten Promise
This was painted with an art challenge Swordtember in mind. The key is embellished with gold paint, which looks lovely in person.
Comforting Embrace
This was a gift for a friend, based on the books His Dark Materials.
Critter Christmas
A small watercolour based on the prompt “Critter Christmas” which I painted as part of an art exchange. I drew some inspiration from Beatrix Potter for this one.
Pokémon Birthday Bash
A Birthday card for my brother. It was fun using blue ink, I think it helped the picture feel brighter and more colourful than black would’ve done.
Reverie by the sea
This depicts a selkie, a creature from Celtic mythology. They are seals, that can take their skins off to take a human form, and in this painting you can see a half clad selkie.
Strawberry Dragon
This little painting was for a friend’s birthday, and was featured on the DeviantArt daily deviations.
Ocean Pebbles
This was a gift for my partner, who adores the seaside, the ocean, lakes, rivers and so on.
Japanese Folklore
This was my part fo an art exchange with a friend, we decided on the theme Japanese folklore.
